
Green Heritage Training at Ostia Antica: Narrative Creation and Game Design

The Green Heritage project organized a successful study visit to Viminacium from April 14 to 16, 2025, bringing together partners to exchange best practices in environmental conservation and cultural heritage preservation. The visit, organized by the Institute of Archaeology at the Viminacium Archaeological Park, highlighted the integration of sustainability in heritage conservation.
On the first day, participants had a study visit of the Viminacium Archaeological Park, where they learned about the historical significance of the site and the green practices currently being implemented. Discussions focused on improving energy efficiency and sustainability in cultural monuments.
On the second day, participants took part in a herbs seed planting, making a green garden initiative at Viminacium, real archaeological excavations focusing on heritage sustainability and green practices at the field, and workshops on Roman buidling construction techniques, ancient materials, with a special focus on the reuse of ancient materials and conservation eficiaency and sustainability enabling low carbon footprint. A Roman food workshop was held, followed by a Roman banquet, suggesting the importance of use natural ingridients in the daily kitchen.
On the final day, participants explored the digital potential of Viminacium, with presentations on photogrammetry, VR, and AR. Meetings with local experts and organizations provided valuable insights into cultural heritage, green sustainability, and community development initiatives in Serbia, with some important conclusions after the round table disscusions.
This visit proved to be a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange and enhanced collaboration among partners, ensuring that heritage preservation efforts are sustainable and relevant for future generations.
